What is a Bariatric Surgery?

It is a procedure intended to make the stomach smaller and to limit the amount of food that the stomach can hold, so the patient feels satisfied with a lesser amount of food.

How do I know if I qualify for bariatric surgery?
  • If you are 100 pounds or more overweight.
  • If you have a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or greater.
  • If your BMI is 35 or greater with one or more co-morbidity conditions and has had no success with other weight loss therapies such as diet, exercise, and medications.

How do I know which surgery is right for me?

How successful is a bariatric surgery?

If you’ve tried dieting, you know the biggest problem is keeping weight off long term; most of our patients lose between 50 to 70% of their excess body weight and improve or resolve many co-morbid conditions.

Can I get pregnant after surgery?

Yes, but is recommended to wait one year after surgery.

How much time should I take off work?

It depends on the type of work and the type of surgery. If it is a desk job, then a few days after surgery. If it requires lifting, then a couple of weeks with restrictions.

What can I do to prepare for the surgery?

We recommend that you lose 10% of your body weight, increase your physical activity, quit smoking, and quit drinking alcohol. These will not only help to reduce your risks but will also optimize your recovery.

What will my life be like after surgery?
